Improving knowledge transfer to designers working with radically new materials

When designers work with new materials that are radically different from those currently on the market they have to change their design process. As the technology is new it means that the are no existing customers or competitors and the designers have less relevant past experience so they must engage with material scientists to gain knowledge. This is proves to be a real problem as the groups are so different that communication is often difficult impacting the both the cost of the design process and the final output. My research is focusing in using experience from ongoing projects methods to improve the knowledge transfer are being developed which not only improve the design process but also improves the diffusion of innovation in the materials science discipline.
